Chapter Eleven
Josef Sokolov
AT THE SAME TIME, ELSEWHERE in the city, Josef Sokolov had decided to take advantage of the good weather and walk back to the Waverley Inn after his latest visit to the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge.
He was still amazed by the lack of overall security on the bridge, particularly the section that crossed over the naval ships berthed below. Most of the ships were leftovers from the war, some even older. Nonetheless, what was there constituted a significant force of surface ships.
He also noted one of the newer class ship being built sitting in the dry dock at the adjacent shipyard. It was a sleek destroyer type design with some interesting adaptations to it gunnery and electronics array visible in the rigging above the shipâs bridge. There was also another one berthed at one of the docks with scaffolding around its rigging. He remembered Wilcox mentioning something about the new sonar systems being fitted to a ship for sea trials, perhaps this was it. If so, then what he saw had something to do with the new anti-submarine detection systems he was sent here to obtain. He was a little disappointed that Wilcox had as yet been able to get the information he wanted. If he continued to be unsuccessful he would have to consider other options to get the information: riskier options. He turned and started back to the Halifax side.
As he walked along Gottingen Street, he wondered just how far he wanted to pursue the mission in light of their plan to defect. After all, what would be the point of risking exposing themselves and possible capture; both possibilities would have a negative effect if they did manage to defect. Then, there was the potential danger posed by the possibility that Agapov had dispatched another agent to monitor them. Perhaps with orders to eliminate them if they deviated from the mission; typical GRU operational procedure.
It was just as he reached the corner at Cornwallis Street that he sensed something was out of place, like he was being watched.
He started to cross the street amid the crowd of people, still feeling uneasy. He continued on, relying on his training to see if he could identify the danger, if any. Using the reflections in the passing shop windows, he tried to pick out anyone who did not seem to belong. After another block and a half, he saw no one. He continued on, making sure to stay within the flow of pedestrians.
